Does Anxiety make you Freeze in Arguments? It’s Not Just Emotional… It’s Neurological!

When Your Words Disappear Mid-Conflict

If you’ve ever been so anxious you couldn’t find the words to speak–you’re not imagining it. There’s real brain science behind that frustrating, silent struggle.

Anxiety and trauma impact the brain. PTSD has a significant impact on the area of the brain called Broca’s area.  As a speech-language pathologist, this is one the of the hallmark regions we study in our neuroanatomy classes.  It is critical for language production and speech control.

How Anxiety Affects the Brain’s Language Center

When anxiety is severe, blood flow to Broca’s area can literally shut down.  On  fMRI scientists have visualized this area completely cut off when they replicate PTSD in their studies. The result? You can’t speak. Your words disappear. That feeling of “shutting down” in the middle of a conflict or high-stress moment? That’s not weakness. It’s your brain prioritizing blood flow to your heart and lungs, but your communication takes a hit because of it!

Why It’s Not Just Emotional— It’s Neurological

At Minds Matter, we see this all the time. Clients come to us saying, “I just freeze,” or “I can’t get the words out when I’m overwhelmed.” And the truth is–it’s not just emotional. It’s neurological.

That’s why we take a whole-person approach to brain health.

How We Help You Find Your Voice Again with QEEG Brain Mapping

We combine cognitive evaluation and QEEG brain mapping to understand how your brain is functioning. Then our certified brain injury specialists–licensed occupational and speech-language therapists–develop a personalized plan to help you regulate anxiety and regain control over communication.

You can learn strategies to calm the nervous system, increase blood flow to Broca’s area, and speak with more confidence–even in high-stress situations. That means being able to speak up during arguments instead of shutting down. It means finding your voice again, even when anxiety tries to take it.

Your brain is wired to protect you. But at Minds Matter, we teach you how to retrain it to support you.

Because your voice matters. And we’re here to help you use it.
