Traditional Healthcare is Holding Back Prevention of Dementia

Cognitive Decline Deserves More Than Resignation

I’ve spent over two decades working with individuals and families affected by cognitive decline. I’ve sat knee to knee with people trying to piece together what’s happening to their loved ones. I’ve heard the heartbreak, the frustration, and–perhaps most alarmingly–the resignation.

These patients have seen the neurologist who says, “Take this pill that has no chance of reversing these changes but may slow down the progression.  Then come see me in a year…” as if nothing else can be done.  This is the standard of care in dementia treatment…. “diagnose and adios.”

The Problem with Waiting

It takes, on average, 17 years for scientific research to make its way into everyday clinical practice. That’s nearly two decades of missed opportunities, outdated treatment approaches, and lives affected by preventable suffering.

The Science is Catching Up

Take Dr. Dale Bredesen, for example. He has been talking about–and proving through research–that Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented and even reversed with comprehensive, individualized, non-pharmaceutical approaches. He’s been doing this for years. But because his methods don’t fit the traditional pill-for-every-ill model, many in the medical community dismissed his work as fringe or even “whacko.”

And yet… here we are. Harvard (yes, Harvard) has now published findings showing that reversal of cognitive decline is possible. What was once considered radical is now gaining legitimacy. But how many people could we have helped sooner if we had been willing to keep an open mind?

A Different Approach to Brain Health

Here at Minds Matter, we believe in hope backed by science. We believe that your brain deserves better than a wait-and-see approach. We pair cognitive evaluations with QEEG brain mapping to look under the hood of how your brain is functioning. We educate. We coach. We guide clients and families to take real steps now to reduce risk, improve function, and reclaim their futures.

Why Hope is Not Naïve

The truth is: if we don’t challenge the cynicism that dominates traditional healthcare, we’ll never get ahead of dementia. When we scoff at anything that isn’t a pharmaceutical as being “too holistic,” we shut down progress. When we call providers “alternative” for daring to talk about diet, sleep, inflammation, and stress, we stall innovation.

I’m not saying we ignore science. I’m saying we follow all the science. Especially the parts that offer hope.

Let’s Stop Waiting 17 Years

So let’s stop waiting 17 years. Let’s stop dismissing new approaches just because they don’t come in a bottle. Let’s lean in, ask better questions, and give people a chance to fight for their brain health before it’s too late.

At Minds Matter, we are not here to offer magic pills. We’re here to walk beside you, to equip you with knowledge, and to give you a plan grounded in the best of what we know now–not what we knew 20 years ago.

Hope is not naïve. Cynicism is what keeps us stuck.

Let’s choose differently.
