What Is Post-Concussion Syndrome—and Why It Often Goes Undiagnosed

by | Aug 26, 2025

When a “Minor” Head Injury Isn’t Minor

Have you (or someone you love) gone through a mild head injury and assumed the lingering headaches, brain fog, anxiety, or dizziness would fade? When those symptoms drag on instead of improve, it could be post-concussion syndrome (PCS). And here’s the truth: it’s much more common—and underdiagnosed—than most people realize.

What Post Concussion Syndrome Looks Like

According to the medical literature, about 15% of people who suffer a mild traumatic brain injury (like a concussion) will experience symptoms that continue beyond three months—that’s when we label it post-concussion syndrome.  PCS isn’t just headaches. Symptoms range from:

  • Brain fog and memory issues
  • Trouble concentrating or processing information
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Dizziness, balance problems, or vision changes
  • Headaches and sleep disruptions
  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or irritable
  • Vision changes, double vision, loss of vision

Post-concussion syndrome isn’t always obvious, either. And just because you have had a “normal” MRI or CT doesn’t mean that you don’t have PCS.  Sometimes, the real injury is on the neurovascular level, where inflammation and blood flow disruptions slow your brain function long after the head trauma has passed.

Why PCS Is Missed So Often

Here’s the frustrating part: many people don’t recognize PCS as a treatable brain injury. Instead, people are often told:

  • “You’re fine.”
  • “Just give it time.”
  • “It’s stress or anxiety.”

But the brain isn’t a muscle that heals with rest alone. If this were knee surgery, nobody would say “wait and walk it off.” They’d send you to physical therapy. Why? Because functioning requires targeted rehab.

Yet when it comes to head injuries, many are left untreated—and that’s why lasting cognitive and emotional challenges remain hidden in plain sight.

At Minds Matter we know this: neuroplasticity works—even months or years later.

How We Treat PCS at Minds Matter

At Minds Matter PLLC, we offer a similar philosophy, combining:

    • Cognitive evaluations and QEEG brain mapping
    • Personalized therapy led by certified brain injury specialists (SLPs and OTs)
    • Real-world rehab plans to retrain attention, memory, language, balance, and emotional regulation

If you’re noticing cognitive or emotional changes after a head injury—even one that seemed minor—you don’t have to wait for “just time.” You deserve a plan. A guide. A team that knows how to treat the brain with the same respect we give physical injuries.

Post-concussion syndrome is not in your head—it’s in your brain. And even when physicians overlook it, your experiences matter. There are ways to retrain and recover.

At Minds Matter, we don’t just validate your symptoms—we partner with you to address them. Through brain mapping, personalized therapy, and neuroplasticity-driven strategies, we help you step out of the haze and regain clarity, focus, and function.

If you’ve had a concussion—any head trauma—and still feel “off,” call us to see if we can help  you along your journey to a better brain.
